A very clean set, with very little foxing to the text, the illustrations extremely fresh and each with its original tissue guard.
Bound in the publisher’s green cloth, faded on the spines and the on the boards of volumes 4 and 5. The bindings professionally restored to a high standard, with some replacement of worn cloth at the head and the foot of the spines, some fraying of the original cloth on some hinges, but the bindings solid because this has been under laid with matching cloth. With the original yellow endpapers, not cracked on the hinges and all edges gilt.
An important Victorian natural history book and a monument of coloured illustration. The plates in this early issue are of great delicacy and fidelity, far surpassing the courser plates in the later issues of this work.
